In a nutshell: Why is Sky dropping today? SKY is falling mainly because Moody’s gave Sky Protocol its first credit rating, a speculative-grade B3 that flagged a very thin capital cushion, and the news landed in the middle of a broad crypto sell-off. At 1:51 ET (05:51 UTC) on October 8, SKY traded around $0.0792, down about 10.4% in 24 hours, while Bitcoin was down about 1.7% (CoinGecko).

Why Is Sky Dropping Today?
The short answer to why is Sky dropping today is a credit-rating headline hitting a weak market. At our check, SKY was the biggest 24-hour loser among the top 100 coins on CoinGecko, well ahead of Stacks (STX, down about 8.7%), ranked #55 by market value (about $1.86 billion). Its 24-hour range ran from about $0.0886 down to $0.0785, per CoinGecko.
This is SKY’s second sharp drop this week. On October 6 it slid after a record near $0.1009, as we covered in why Sky dropped after its all-time high. At our latest check, SKY sat about 21.5% below that peak. We found no report of a hack or exploit tied to today’s move.
Main Reason: Moody’s B3 Rating Put Sky’s Thin Capital in the Spotlight
At 8:07 a.m. ET (12:07 UTC) on October 7, the Sky Frontier Foundation announced that Moody’s Ratings had assigned Sky Protocol, the former MakerDAO, a B3 issuer rating with a stable outlook. It is the first rating Moody’s has issued on any stablecoin protocol, per the official Sky announcement. B3 sits in speculative-grade (“junk”) territory, at the same level as the B- that S&P Global gave Sky in August 2025, CoinMarketCap noted.
The detail traders focused on was capital. Moody’s found about $90 million in tangible common equity against roughly $10 billion in tangible managed assets as of September, a cushion of under 1% that it called a “material credit weakness,” Bitcoin.com News reported. Moody’s also cited DAO governance risk and the lack of audited financial statements.
That matters for SKY holders. If losses ever overwhelmed Sky’s capital, the protocol would mint and try to sell new governance tokens to cover them, according to the same Bitcoin.com News report.
The timing lines up: CoinGecko’s hourly data shows SKY near $0.0834 at 12:00 UTC on October 7, just before the release, and about $0.0796 by 15:00 UTC, roughly 4.6% lower. Not everyone reads the rating as bad news: The Block framed it as a sign of growing institutional interest in Sky’s USDS, and CoinMarketCap’s AI summary blamed the macro sell-off more than the rating.
Sky issues the USDS and DAI stablecoins and deploys them through DeFi. Our guides on what stablecoins are and what DeFi is cover the basics.
Other Factors Behind the SKY Drop
- A market-wide sell-off. Bitcoin slipped below $84,000 early Wednesday after Iran stepped up attacks on oil tankers, pushing Brent crude above $101 a barrel and lifting Treasury yields and the dollar, CoinDesk reported. DeFi tokens fell almost 6% in 24 hours, and SKY was sliding before the Moody’s news.
- Leveraged longs flushed out. Crypto liquidations jumped to $547 million over 24 hours, according to CoinGlass data cited by CoinDesk, mostly from traders betting on higher prices.
- A hawkish Fed. Minutes from the Fed’s September meeting showed most officials think one more rate hike would be “appropriate” by year-end, per CoinDesk.
- Thin trading. SKY’s 24-hour volume was about $20.9 million at our check, only around 1.1% of its market value (CoinGecko). That lets sellers move the price further.
What Happens Next
- What Moody’s wants to see: An upgrade becomes possible if Sky’s capital ratio rises above 2.5% and stays there while profitability, liquidity and asset risk hold steady. A ratio below 0.5%, back-to-back quarterly losses or weaker liquidity could push the rating lower, per Bitcoin.com News. Sky governance targets $150 million in tangible common equity over the medium term.
- Sky’s response: The Foundation says next steps will be published “as part of the roadmap in the near future,” with an investment-grade rating as the long-term goal (Sky).
- Governance vote today: Sky’s Poll 1652 closes at 16:00 UTC (12 p.m. ET) on October 8. It includes defining the circulating USDS supply used for Sky’s backstop capital target.
- Macro calendar: US CPI and PPI data for September are due next week, per CoinDesk, and the next Fed meeting is October 27–28, per the Federal Reserve.

FAQ
Is USDS losing its dollar peg?
No. At our check, USDS traded at about $0.999 and DAI at about $1.00 on CoinGecko. The selling hit the SKY governance token, not the stablecoins’ peg.
