In a nutshell: Why is Sky dropping today? SKY is falling mainly because traders are taking profits after the token hit a new all-time high near $0.1009 on Monday and then reversed hard. At 12:38 a.m. ET (04:38 UTC) on October 6, SKY traded around $0.0872, down about 8.9% in 24 hours, while Bitcoin was roughly flat (CoinGecko).

Why Is Sky Dropping Today?
The short answer to why is Sky dropping today is a sell-off after a record. CoinGecko data shows SKY set a fresh all-time high of about $0.1009 at 12:10 UTC (8:10 a.m. ET) on Monday, October 5. Within roughly four hours it had slipped to about $0.089, and by our check it was near $0.0872, about 13.5% below that peak.
At the time we checked, SKY was the only top-100 coin down more than 8% in 24 hours, ranked #54 by market value (about $2.04 billion), with 24-hour trading volume near $46.6 million (CoinGecko). The Currency Analytics also listed SKY as the day’s biggest loser, down 8.12% to $0.0881 in its snapshot.
We found no report of a hack, exploit or large token unlock tied to the move. About 23.43 billion of SKY’s 23.46 billion total supply is already circulating, per CoinGecko, so there is no big unlock waiting to hit the market.
Main Reason: Profit-Taking After a Fast Rally
SKY ran hard into this drop. As of October 4, Altcoin Investor reported a 42.6% gain over 30 days and 26.6% over seven days, and called the positioning crowded. The prior record it cited was $0.100535 from December 2024, so Monday’s spike only just cleared the old ceiling before sellers stepped in.
CoinMarketCap’s AI analysis named profit-taking as the primary reason, noting a 7-day RSI above 90 (an extreme “overbought” reading) and a 79% jump in 24-hour volume during the decline. Higher volume on the way down suggests real selling, not just a quiet market drifting lower.
The rally itself had a solid story behind it. On September 23, Galaxy Digital put $100 million of Sky’s yield-bearing sUSDS stablecoin into its corporate treasury, approved it as loan collateral and bought an undisclosed amount of SKY, The Block reported. When good news is already priced in, a new high is often where early buyers cash out.
Other Factors Behind the Drop
- A coin-specific move, not a market crash. Bitcoin was near $85,550 and down just 0.05% in 24 hours at our check, with Ether also roughly flat (CoinGecko). CoinMarketCap’s snapshot earlier in the session showed the total market down about 0.9%.
- Thin trading relative to size. CryptoTicker noted on October 4 that daily turnover was under 1% of SKY’s market cap, which means large orders can move the price sharply in either direction.
- Key levels gave way. CoinMarketCap had flagged $0.092 as support and $0.10 as resistance on October 5. SKY failed to hold above $0.10 and then broke below $0.092.
What Is Sky (SKY)?
Sky is the rebranded MakerDAO, one of the oldest DeFi lending protocols. In 2024 the MKR governance token became SKY and the DAI stablecoin was upgraded to USDS, CoinDesk reported. Holders of sUSDS earn the Sky Savings Rate, and SKY holders vote on protocol rules through Sky‘s governance. New to these ideas? Start with our guides on what stablecoins are and what DeFi is.
What Happens Next
- Levels sources are watching: CoinMarketCap’s October 3 analysis named $0.085 as support, with $0.08 below it, while the $0.10 zone and the new record remain the resistance overhead.
- Governance vote: Sky’s Atlas Edit Weekly Cycle poll (Poll 1652) opened October 5 at 16:00 UTC and runs three days. It covers technical changes, including stUSDS documents and Spark’s setup on Arbitrum.
- Buybacks: Sky’s Smart Burn Engine keeps buying SKY with protocol revenue. An August executive vote sent 55% of each cycle’s USDS to buybacks.
These are facts and levels cited by sources, not price predictions.
