Bitcoin ETFs in Canada
Canada approved spot Bitcoin ETFs about three years before the US. The Purpose Bitcoin ETF (BTCC) started trading on the TSX on February 18, 2021, as the first of its kind in North America. Other TSX-listed spot funds include:
- Fidelity Advantage Bitcoin ETF (FBTC): same ticker as Fidelity’s US fund, but a separate Canadian fund priced in Canadian dollars.
- CI Galaxy Bitcoin ETF (BTCX)
- Evolve Bitcoin ETF (EBIT)
- 3iQ Bitcoin ETF (BTCQ)
Many of these offer CAD and USD units. Step-by-step help is in our guide on how to buy a Bitcoin ETF in Canada.
Futures Bitcoin ETFs Are Different
Funds like the ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) do not hold bitcoin. They hold bitcoin futures contracts, which must be rolled each month, and that can make returns drift from the bitcoin price. The SEC approved spot Bitcoin ETFs in January 2024, years after futures-based funds. Everything ranked above is a spot fund.
How to Compare Them
- Fee: the clearest difference, since all spot funds track the same asset.
- Size and trading volume: bigger, busier funds usually have tighter bid-ask spreads.
- Custodian: who holds the bitcoin.
- Your broker: most US brokers offer all of them. See how to buy a Bitcoin ETF.
Not advice: this list ranks funds by size only. It is not a recommendation to buy any fund, and size says nothing about future returns.
