Why Is LayerZero Dropping Today? (October 17, 2026)

In a nutshell: Why is LayerZero dropping today? ZRO is giving back a fast, leverage-fuelled rally from October 16. Traders are taking profits ahead of a scheduled October 20 unlock of about 23.6 million ZRO for insiders, and two partners picked rival Chainlink’s cross-chain tool the same day. At 2:29 a.m. ET (6:29 a.m. UTC / 11:29 a.m. PKT) on October 17, 2026, ZRO traded around $1.97, down about 12.6% in 24 hours, the worst drop in the top 100, per CoinGecko.

Why Is LayerZero Dropping Today?

The short answer to why is LayerZero dropping today: ZRO jumped too far, too fast on October 16, and the gains are unwinding before a known supply event. None of the coverage we reviewed points to a hack or delisting. At our check, ZRO ranked #90 by market value (about $788 million). Its 24-hour range ran from about $2.27 down to $1.94, and 24-hour volume was near $114 million (CoinGecko). ZRO was still up about 92% over 30 days but down about 2.2% over seven days, and it sat about 74% below its $7.47 all-time high from December 2024.

The drop stands out because the wider market was only slightly lower. In CoinGecko’s top-100 list at our check, 78 coins were down over 24 hours, but most moves were small. The next-worst performer, Rain (RAIN), was off about 8.1%, and Venice Token (VVV) was third at about 5.7%. Bitcoin traded near $81,481 (down about 0.7%) and Ether near $2,428 (down about 0.6%) (CoinGecko).

LayerZero is a messaging protocol that lets apps and tokens move between different blockchains. CoinGecko lists ZRO under cross-chain communication and many ecosystems, including Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base and BNB Chain. Main Reason: A Leveraged Rally Is Reversing

ZRO’s run-up came fast. On October 16, CoinDesk reported that ZRO gained 7.3% since midnight UTC to about $2.24, extending a rally linked to its ATLAS trading engine, which routes most of its fees into buying back and burning ZRO. Measured over a full day from its recent low near $1.80, AMBCrypto put the jump at about 23%, to a local high of $2.25.

Much of that rally ran on borrowed money. Citing CoinGlass, AMBCrypto reported that ZRO’s futures open interest (the value of open bets) jumped 31% to $275 million and derivatives volume rose 63% to $336 million, with more traders betting on gains than on losses. The same report flagged heavy profit-taking: more than $26 million of ZRO moved onto exchanges, which often signals that holders plan to sell. ZRO has now given back the whole move, falling from a 24-hour high near $2.27 to about $1.97 (CoinGecko).

What this means: When a rally is built on new leveraged long bets, a small pullback can force those traders to sell, which pushes the price down further. If you’re new to this, our guide to how margin trading in crypto works explains why leverage magnifies moves in both directions. We saw a similar profit-taking pattern this week in why Bitway is dropping.

Other Factors Behind the ZRO Drop

  • October 20 insider unlock. DefiLlama lists a cliff unlock of 23.63 million ZRO on October 20, 2026: about 10.63 million for core contributors and 13 million for strategic partners, equal to about 5.9% of the circulating supply. Tokenomist also lists October 20 as the next unlock. Trackers differ slightly on the size: CryptoTicker found estimates from 23.08 million to 23.63 million, while AMBCrypto cited 25.7 million. Traders often sell or hedge before an unlock, not only on the day. For a recent example, see how token unlocks weighed on Rain.
  • Buybacks are small next to the unlock. CryptoTicker, citing the LayerZero Foundation’s own buyback figures, reported about 2.54 million ZRO bought back from September 2025 to September 2026, roughly 11% of a single monthly unlock of this size.
  • Two partners chose Chainlink. On October 16, Tokyo-based Pacific Meta named Chainlink’s CCIP its “preferred interoperability solution.” The same firm had announced a strategic partnership with LayerZero in February 2026. Also on October 16, Chainlink’s changelog added Gravity Mainnet to CCIP; Gravity had announced it would switch from LayerZero to CCIP for its layer-1 launch. On X, a widely shared post called them “two protocols departing LayerZero for Chainlink in one day.” There’s no hard data showing how much these news items moved the price, but they gave sellers a story. (For more on that rival network, see our guide to Chainlink staking.)
  • Ecosystem pruning. CoinMarketCap’s CMC AI summary notes that Metis will end Stargate support on its Andromeda chain on October 23, with LayerZero Labs’ services there shutting down on October 30. Separately, LayerZero’s October 15 ecosystem update said STG holders can convert their tokens to ZRO only until December 15.
  • A record of sharp swings. ZRO has had several big daily moves this month. Coincu reported a 14.5% drop on October 13 after about 2.56 million ZRO moved onto exchanges over two days. Moves like that show how sensitive ZRO is to large holders’ exchange activity.

What to Watch Next

  • The unlock itself: DefiLlama shows the October 20 unlock at 05:33 UTC (10:33 a.m. PKT). An unlock makes tokens transferable; it does not force anyone to sell.
  • Leverage and exchange flows: Watch whether open interest keeps falling and whether tokens keep flowing onto exchanges. Fresh inflows ahead of October 20 would point to more selling.
  • Volume and rank: Check whether ZRO’s 24-hour volume and #90 market-cap rank hold up on CoinGecko.

These are reported figures and things to watch, not price predictions or trading advice.

FAQ

Did LayerZero get hacked today?

The cited coverage shows no sign of a LayerZero hack or exchange delisting on October 16–17. Reports describe a pullback after a leveraged rally, profit-taking before an insider unlock, and partner news that favored Chainlink (CoinGecko, CoinDesk, AMBCrypto, DefiLlama).

Why did ZRO fall when Bitcoin barely moved?

At our check, ZRO was down about 12.6% while Bitcoin and Ether were each down less than 1% (CoinGecko). That gap shows the selling was mostly specific to ZRO: traders were unwinding a sharp one-day rally and getting ahead of the October 20 unlock.

How much of LayerZero’s supply is unlocked?

About 400 million ZRO, or roughly 40% of the 1 billion total supply, is circulating, per CoinGecko and Tokenomist. DefiLlama lists the next unlock, about 23.63 million ZRO for insiders, for October 20, 2026.
