In a nutshell: Why is Worldcoin dropping today? Traders who bet on WLD with borrowed money are being forced out, and the selling landed right around Worldcoin’s monthly token unlock date, when about 100 million more WLD become available. No hack, delisting or protocol problem has been reported. At 2:24 a.m. ET (6:24 a.m. UTC / 11:24 a.m. PKT) on October 24, 2026, Worldcoin traded around $0.475, down about 14% in 24 hours, the worst drop in the top 100, per CoinGecko.

Why Is Worldcoin Dropping Today?
The short answer to why is Worldcoin dropping today: a crowded bet on higher prices is unwinding at the same time new supply hits the market. At our check, WLD’s 24-hour range ran from about $0.555 down to $0.471. Worldcoin ranked #54 by market value (about $1.82 billion), and 24-hour trading volume was unusually heavy at about $387 million, roughly 21% of its market cap (CoinGecko). The token was down about 10% over seven days but still up about 15% over 30 days.
Worldcoin is falling much harder than the big coins. CoinGecko showed Bitcoin near $80,673 (down about 1.4%) and Ether near $2,376 (down about 1.2%). In CoinGecko’s top-100 list, the next-worst performers were Lighter (LIT), down about 9.5%, and Akedo (AKE), down about 9.2% (CoinGecko).
What Is Worldcoin (WLD)?
Worldcoin, now branded World Network, is a project co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman through the company Tools for Humanity. It verifies that a user is a unique human using an eye-scanning device called the Orb, then gives them a digital “World ID.” WLD is the project’s token. Total supply is 10 billion WLD, and about 3.82 billion were circulating at our check, so the fully diluted value was about $4.75 billion, well above the current market cap (CoinGecko). WLD still trades about 96% below its $11.74 all-time high from March 2024.
Main Reason: Leveraged Longs Are Being Liquidated
The fall has been a steady slide over about two days rather than one sudden crash. TokenPost reported that WLD fell 7.14% in four hours to $0.4955 on Binance by 6:25 p.m. ET on October 23, and that a one-hour count across Binance, Bybit and OKX showed $590,000 in long liquidations and $0 in short liquidations (TokenPost). Market-data site Lypp then tracked a further drop of about 8% to $0.4743 on Binance early on October 24, with Binance WLD perpetual open interest down 9.5% to about $100.9 million (Lypp).
That pattern matters. When long liquidations pile up while open interest falls, it usually means traders who borrowed to bet on a rise are being closed out, not that new sellers are piling in. Each forced close is a market sell order, which pushes the price lower and can trigger the next liquidation. Our explainer on how liquidation works in crypto walks through that chain reaction step by step.
The positioning was lopsided before the drop. CoinMarketCap’s CMC AI summary from October 23 cited a derivatives report showing WLD at about 95% long by position value among top traders, with heavy retail attention on Korean exchanges. It found no WLD-specific bad news such as a regulatory action, exploit or protocol incident.
What this means: When almost everyone is betting the same way with leverage, a small dip can force many of them to sell at once. That turns a modest pullback into a double-digit drop.
The October 24 Token Unlock
The timing also lines up with Worldcoin’s monthly unlock date. Token-tracking site Tokenomics.com lists an unlock of 100,069,444 WLD on October 24, 2026, about 1% of total supply and about 1.8% of market cap, split roughly 48.6% to the community, 28.3% to investors and 23.1% to insiders (Tokenomics.com). An unlock means locked tokens become free to move, and holders who receive them can sell.
One detail is worth knowing: World itself says WLD unlocks a little every day in a straight line, with no single large “cliff.” On July 24, 2026, that daily rate fell 43%, from about 5.1 million to about 2.9 million WLD a day (World; The Block). Trackers group those releases into a monthly figure on the 24th, and many traders treat that date as a supply event, so they cut risk ahead of it.
Past unlock dates have seen similar moves. CoinGecko’s WLD price history shows the token sliding about 11% on September 23 (UTC), the day before the September 24 unlock, before rebounding above $0.53 by September 27. That doesn’t mean the same thing will happen this time. We saw a similar setup with LayerZero’s drop ahead of its token unlock earlier this month.
Other Factors Behind the WLD Drop
- Giving back a quick rally. CoinGecko’s daily data show WLD climbing from about $0.49 on October 19 to about $0.59 on October 21, a gain of roughly 20% in two days. Much of that has now reversed.
- A shaky wider market. CMC AI linked an earlier 7.3% WLD drop on October 22 to a broad risk-off day in tech stocks and crypto. Lypp noted traders are also positioning ahead of next week’s Federal Reserve meeting.
- Lots of supply still to come. With only about 38% of the 10 billion WLD circulating today (CoinGecko), the steady flow of newly unlocked tokens remains a long-term overhang.
- Positive news didn’t help. World and Cloudflare recently announced a “Trusted Agent Delegation” framework that would use World ID to verify that an AI agent acts for a real person (Outposts). No technical spec or launch date has been published, and it did not stop the selling.
What to Watch Next
- Liquidations and open interest: If long liquidations fade and open interest stops falling, forced selling is easing. Our guide to funding rates explains another signal of how crowded a trade is.
- Volume: Today’s volume is very high relative to WLD’s size. Shrinking volume on further dips would suggest sellers are running out.
- The overall market: WLD is falling far more than Bitcoin today, so a broader move in either direction will likely matter for it too.

A day later, Akedo fell after a leverage-driven rally that followed its own token unlock; see why Akedo is dropping today (October 25, 2026).
FAQ
Did Worldcoin get hacked today?
No hack, exploit or delisting appears in the coverage we reviewed for October 22–24. CMC AI and Lypp both found no Worldcoin-specific bad news behind the move.
Why is Worldcoin falling more than Bitcoin?
WLD had a crowded, leveraged long position and a monthly supply release at the same time. It is also much smaller than Bitcoin, so forced selling moves its price more.
How much WLD unlocks on October 24?
Tokenomics.com lists about 100.07 million WLD, roughly 1% of total supply. World says the tokens actually unlock gradually every day, at about 2.9 million WLD a day since July 24, 2026.
