Who are the biggest bitcoin investors right now? Lists online often mix up confirmed holdings, blockchain guesses and old rumors. This guide sticks to numbers you can check yourself. We ranked the five largest investors that bought bitcoin and publicly disclose how much they hold. Then we explain where governments, Satoshi Nakamoto and famous individuals fit in.

Biggest bitcoin investors 2026: top 5 ranking with Strategy, BlackRock IBIT, Twenty One, Metaplanet and MARA

How We Ranked the Biggest Bitcoin Investors

We used three simple rules:

  • They bought it. An investor put money into bitcoin. That rules out the U.S. government, whose coins mostly come from criminal seizures, and Satoshi Nakamoto, who mined early coins. We cover both separately below.
  • They disclose it. Every holding comes from an SEC filing, a fund’s daily holdings file or an official company announcement.
  • Two sources and a date. Each number is checked against at least one other source, such as the public tracker BitcoinTreasuries, and shows its “as of” date.

One note on ETFs. A spot bitcoin ETF holds bitcoin on behalf of the people who own its shares. We include BlackRock’s fund as one entry because it is the largest, and it shows how much ordinary investors now own through their brokerage accounts. New to these funds? Start with our Bitcoin ETF guide.

1. Strategy (Michael Saylor): 847,666 BTC

Holdings: 847,666 BTC as of September 27, 2026.

Strategy, the company formerly called MicroStrategy, is the largest corporate bitcoin investor by a wide margin. Executive chairman Michael Saylor began buying in 2020. Since then, the company has turned its balance sheet into a bitcoin treasury funded by stock and preferred share sales.

According to Strategy’s Form 8-K filed with the SEC on September 28, 2026, the company bought 1,665 BTC between September 21 and 27 at an average price of about $85,681. That brought total holdings to 847,666 BTC. The aggregate purchase price was about $63.95 billion, an average of roughly $75,437 per coin including fees. BitcoinTreasuries shows the same 847,666 BTC total.

That is about 4% of bitcoin’s 21 million coin cap. Strategy did sell some bitcoin over the summer before resuming purchases in August, so its total can move in both directions.

2. BlackRock iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT): ~799,879 BTC

Holdings: 799,878.63 BTC as of September 25, 2026 (held for fund shareholders).

BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager, launched the iShares Bitcoin Trust in January 2024. IBIT quickly became the biggest spot bitcoin ETF. BlackRock doesn’t own this bitcoin for itself. The fund holds it for millions of shareholders, from retail savers to pension funds and hedge funds.

The fund’s official iShares page and daily holdings file listed 799,878.63 BTC as of September 25, 2026, with net assets of about $67.07 billion. BitcoinTreasuries’ ETF tracker showed about 796,799 BTC. The small gap likely reflects update timing, so treat the iShares file as the primary number.

If you counted every ETF separately, a few other funds would outrank the companies below. BitcoinTreasuries lists Fidelity’s FBTC at about 184,000 BTC and Grayscale’s GBTC at about 131,500 BTC. We kept one ETF entry to keep this ranking focused on distinct investor types.

3. Twenty One Capital: 43,514 BTC

Holdings: 43,514 BTC as of June 30, 2026 (latest quarterly filing).

Twenty One Capital (NYSE: XXI) was built as a bitcoin holding company from day one. Tether and Bitfinex supplied most of its coins, and SoftBank took a minority stake. It began trading on the NYSE in December 2025 after merging with a Cantor Fitzgerald-backed blank-check company.

Its quarterly report (10-Q) filed with the SEC shows 43,514 BTC as of June 30, 2026, with a fair value of about $2.55 billion at that date. The Block confirmed the 43,514 BTC figure in August. The filing also notes that about 16,116 BTC secure its convertible notes due 2030.

4. Metaplanet: 43,000 BTC

Holdings: 43,000 BTC as of June 30, 2026 (announced July 1–2, 2026).

Tokyo-listed Metaplanet is often called “Japan’s Strategy.” It moved from hotels to a bitcoin treasury strategy in 2024 and has grown fast since. It also runs a bitcoin options business that generates income.

CoinDesk and The Block both reported that Metaplanet added 2,823 BTC in the second quarter, bringing its total to 43,000 BTC. BitcoinTreasuries still lists 43,000 BTC as of late September. You can follow the company’s own updates on Metaplanet’s official site.

Twenty One and Metaplanet are separated by only 514 BTC. A single purchase could change the order.

5. MARA Holdings: 35,577 BTC

Holdings: 35,577 BTC as of June 30, 2026.

MARA Holdings is one of the largest U.S. bitcoin miners. Unlike pure treasury companies, it earns most of its bitcoin by mining and has also bought coins on the open market. For background on mining rewards, see our bitcoin halving guide.

MARA’s 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 reports 35,577 BTC in total. That includes 9,270 BTC loaned out or pledged as collateral. The filing also shows MARA sold about 23,093 BTC in the first half of 2026 to fund operations and manage liquidity. BitcoinTreasuries lists the same 35,577 BTC.

Who Is Not on the List (and Why)

The U.S. government

The U.S. government is probably one of the largest bitcoin holders in the world. But it isn’t really an investor, because most of its coins came from criminal and civil forfeitures. A March 2025 executive order created a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve funded by forfeited bitcoin.

There is no official audited total. BitcoinTreasuries lists about 328,372 BTC, while blockchain analytics firm Arkham has estimated roughly 325,000 BTC. In May 2026, a White House adviser declined to disclose the government’s holdings, according to CoinDesk. Treat any exact figure as an estimate.

Satoshi Nakamoto

Bitcoin’s anonymous creator is often said to own about 1.1 million BTC. That number is an estimate from researchers who studied the “Patoshi” pattern in early mined blocks. It is not a confirmed fact. As Cointelegraph explains, experts still debate how many of those coins really belong to one person. None of them have moved.

Famous individuals

Individuals rarely disclose exact balances, so we didn’t rank them.

  • Tim Draper won the 2014 U.S. Marshals auction of 29,656 BTC seized from Silk Road, Reuters reported. He has not published his current balance.
  • The Winklevoss twins were early buyers and founded the exchange Gemini. Older reports often cite about 70,000 BTC. In April 2026, CoinDesk reported that Arkham-tracked Winklevoss Capital wallets held about 9,328 BTC. Their full personal holdings are not public.
  • Michael Saylor holds bitcoin personally, but his private stack is separate from Strategy’s 847,666 BTC and is not regularly disclosed.

What It Means for Everyday Investors

The biggest bitcoin investors now control a meaningful share of the supply. Strategy and IBIT alone hold about 1.65 million BTC, or roughly 7.8% of the 21 million cap. A few practical takeaways:

  • Big holders can sell, too. MARA sold thousands of coins this year, and Strategy trimmed holdings over the summer. Big buyers don’t guarantee higher prices.
  • Treasury stocks are not bitcoin. Shares of Strategy or Metaplanet can trade above or below the value of their bitcoin. They also carry debt, dilution and company risk.
  • ETFs are the simplest route for many people. A spot ETF tracks the price without self-custody, but it charges fees. Our Bitcoin ETF explainer covers the trade-offs.
  • Taxes still apply. In the US, selling bitcoin, ETF shares or treasury stocks can trigger capital gains. See our crypto taxes guide.

Following what big investors do can be interesting, but it is not a strategy on its own. Your time horizon, risk tolerance and position size matter more.
