Why Is Pearl Dropping Today? (October 23, 2026)

In a nutshell: Why is Pearl dropping today? Traders are taking profits after PRL hit a record high on October 21, and the whole crypto market is lower, which hits a young, thinly traded token harder. No Pearl hack, delisting or forced upgrade has been reported. At 12:52 a.m. ET (4:52 a.m. UTC / 9:52 a.m. PKT) on October 23, 2026, Pearl traded around $2.11, down about 13% in 24 hours, the worst drop in the top 100, per CoinGecko.

Why Is Pearl Dropping Today?

The short answer to why is Pearl dropping today: after a fast run to a new all-time high, holders are cashing in, and a weaker market gives buyers little reason to step in. At our check, PRL’s 24-hour range ran from about $2.44 down to $2.07. Pearl ranked #89 by market value (about $749 million), with 24-hour trading volume near $10.1 million (CoinGecko). The token sat about 14% below its $2.46 all-time high, set on October 21, though it was still up about 12% over seven days and about 25% over 30 days.

The wider market is also red, but Pearl is falling much harder. CoinGecko showed total crypto market value down about 4% in 24 hours, with Bitcoin near $81,559 (down about 1.5%) and Ether near $2,394 (down about 1.9%). In CoinGecko’s top-100 list, the next-worst performers were LayerZero (ZRO) and Stacks (STX), each down about 7% (CoinGecko).

Quick note on the name: the project calls its coin PRL, while CoinGecko lists it as PEARL (ID pearl-2). An unrelated token on the Ink network also uses the PRL ticker, so check the contract or listing before trusting any price you see (Bitcoin Foundation News).

What Is Pearl (PRL)?

Pearl is a proof-of-work blockchain that forked from Bitcoin and launched in April 2026. Instead of solving pure hash puzzles, its miners run matrix multiplications, the core math behind AI models. The team calls this “Proof of Useful Work,” and the idea is that the same GPU work could serve paying AI customers and secure the network at the same time (Yahoo Finance). Max supply is 2.1 billion PRL, and about 355 million were circulating at our check (CoinGecko). If proof of work is new to you, start with our guide to how Bitcoin works.

Main Reason: Profit-Taking After a Record High

Pearl climbed quickly this week. CoinGecko’s PRL price history shows daily closes (UTC) of about $1.99 on October 19, about $2.14 on October 20 and about $2.44 on October 21, a gain of roughly 22% in two days. On October 20, custody firm BitGo said PEARL was live on BitGo for eligible clients, one of several pieces of news that kept attention on the coin.

Then the move reversed. CoinMarketCap’s CMC AI analysis, published October 22 at 3:11 p.m. UTC, named profit-taking after the sharp rally as the primary reason for the fall. It said PEARL had been a top 24-hour gainer at about $2.41 just hours earlier, then dropped about 11% to $2.10 on rising volume. PRL closed October 22 (UTC) near $2.19 and slipped further to about $2.11 by our check.

What this means: When a coin jumps to a new high in a few days, many recent buyers are sitting on quick gains. As soon as momentum stalls, some of them sell, and in a smaller market that selling can pull the price down fast.

Other Factors Behind the PRL Drop

  • A weaker market. CMC AI listed broader market weakness and a “risk-off rotation away from altcoins” as secondary reasons, noting total crypto market value fell 3.29% over the period it measured. CoinGecko showed the total down about 4% at our check.
  • Thin trading. About $10.1 million in daily volume against a roughly $749 million market cap is only about 1.4% turnover (CoinGecko). CoinGecko’s market list shows most PRL trading on smaller exchanges such as BigONE and SafeTrade, so a few large orders can move the price a lot.
  • Heavy new supply from miners. Pearl is issuing many new coins in its early years. Yahoo Finance noted that inflation is “still very high in its first year” and that miners who aren’t serving AI customers may need to sell newly mined coins to cover costs. Unlike Bitcoin’s four-year halving schedule, Pearl’s issuance follows a smooth decay curve.
  • A small float and a big diluted value. Only about 17% of the 2.1 billion max supply circulates today, so at $2.11 the fully diluted value is roughly $4.4 billion, far above the current market cap (CoinGecko).
  • Early-stage risks. The same Yahoo Finance piece flagged that the two largest mining pools recently found an estimated 75–80% of blocks, and that a proposed FP8 upgrade could shut older consumer GPUs out of mining. That upgrade still has no activation date, according to Kryptex Pool, so it isn’t a direct trigger today, but it adds uncertainty for miners.

Not Pearl’s First Sharp Pullback This Month

Pearl has swung hard in both directions in October. On October 15, it was trading near $1.67, down about 13.45% in 24 hours, shortly after a reported 228% monthly rally (Bitcoin Foundation News). It then recovered to new highs within a week. For another fast-rising token that cooled off the same way, see why Bitway has been dropping.

What to Watch Next

  • Volume: CMC AI said shrinking volume near the $2.00 area would suggest selling is easing. Rising volume on further drops would suggest the opposite.
  • The overall market: PRL is falling more than Bitcoin and Ether today, so a broader recovery or a deeper sell-off will likely matter for it too.
  • Upgrade news: Watch official Pearl channels for any FP8 fork date, since that would change which GPUs can mine.
  • Charts: If you follow the price, our guide on how to read crypto charts explains candlesticks, volume and trends.

FAQ

Did Pearl get hacked today?

No hack, exploit or delisting appears in the coverage we reviewed for October 22–23. CMC AI described the drop as profit-taking plus broader market weakness, “not a PEARL-specific issue.”

Why is Pearl falling more than Bitcoin?

PRL rallied to a record just two days ago, so it had fresh gains for traders to lock in. It is also much smaller and trades on fewer, smaller exchanges than Bitcoin, which magnifies moves in both directions.

Is PRL the same as PEARL?

Yes, for the Pearl network from pearlresearch.ai. The project uses PRL, and CoinGecko shows PEARL. A separate, unrelated token on Ink also uses PRL.
