Why Is Polkadot Dropping Today? (October 7, 2026)

In a nutshell: Why is Polkadot dropping today? DOT is falling mainly because a sudden crypto sell-off early Wednesday wiped out more than $400 million in leveraged long bets in about an hour, and DOT, fresh off a big September rally, fell harder than Bitcoin. At 2:02 a.m. ET (06:02 UTC) on October 7, DOT traded around $1.13, down about 8.4% in 24 hours, while Bitcoin was down about 1.3% (CoinGecko).

Why Is Polkadot Dropping Today?

The short answer to why is Polkadot dropping today is a fast, market-wide flush of leveraged traders. According to CoinGecko, DOT’s 24-hour range ran from about $1.25 down to $1.12. At our check it ranked #55 by market value (about $1.92 billion), with 24-hour trading volume near $178 million.

Among the top 100 coins on CoinGecko, only Mantle (MNT, down about 9.8%) fell more than DOT. Internet Computer, Arbitrum and Uniswap were each down roughly 7% to 8%, which points to a broad altcoin sell-off rather than a Polkadot-only problem.

We found no report of a Polkadot hack, exploit, delisting or token unlock tied to the move.

Main Reason: A $400 Million Long Liquidation Wave

The drop hit in one burst. TokenPost reported that DOT fell 6.18% in a single hour, from $1.20 to $1.12 on Binance’s DOT/USDT market, as of 10:03 p.m. ET on October 6 (02:03 UTC on October 7). In that same hour, about $640,000 of DOT long positions were liquidated across Binance, Bybit and OKX, with zero shorts liquidated.

That was part of a much bigger move. Bitcoin fell about $1,600 in roughly 15 minutes and slipped below $84,000, triggering more than $400 million in long liquidations across crypto, per TokenPost. BeInCrypto, citing CoinGlass data, put the one-hour long liquidations at about $403.6 million, or 97% of all positions closed in that hour.

A liquidation happens when an exchange force-closes a leveraged bet because the trader’s collateral runs out. When many long bets get closed at once, the exchange sells into a falling market, which pushes prices lower and can trigger the next round. Smaller altcoins like DOT tend to move more than Bitcoin in these flushes.

Other Factors Behind the DOT Drop

  • Macro risk-off mood. CoinDesk tied Bitcoin’s dip to Iran stepping up attacks on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude rose to about $101.50 a barrel, the US dollar strengthened, and the 10-year Treasury yield climbed to 5.31%. Bitcoin hit a low near $83,840 after trading near $86,600 on Tuesday.
  • Profit-taking after a big September. DOT gained about 45.4% in September, its biggest monthly move of 2026, according to Coin Edition. Coins that rally hard often give back more when the market turns.
  • Thin trading before the drop. Blockchain.News noted on October 6 that DOT’s Binance spot volume was only about $12 million over 24 hours, with sellers more aggressive than buyers. Thin order books make sharp drops easier.
  • Weak altcoin demand overall. Ether fell about 3.5% and Dogecoin about 5% in the same sell-off, per CoinDesk.

DOT is the token behind Polkadot’s nominated proof-of-stake network, so holders can lock it up to earn rewards. Staking rewards do not protect against price drops like this one. Our guide on what staking in crypto is explains how that works and the risks.

What Happens Next

  • Fed minutes and next meeting: Minutes from the Federal Reserve’s September 15–16 meeting, when it raised rates by a quarter point, are due Wednesday, October 7, per CoinDesk. The next Fed meeting is October 27–28, per the Fed’s calendar.
  • dotUSD vote: Polkadot Referendum 1944, which proposes a native stablecoin called dotUSD, entered its confirmation stage on October 6. Per Coin Edition, it would use $2.5 million in USDT to mint the first dotUSD and $2.5 million in DOT to seed a liquidity pool. New to stablecoins? See what stablecoins are.
  • Leverage still in the market: Total crypto futures open interest was still about $150.2 billion after the flush, per CoinGlass figures cited by BeInCrypto.

High-beta alts can keep swinging when liquidations cluster. For a later example from the October 9 selloff, see why NEAR is dropping today.

FAQ

Was Polkadot hacked?

No. We found no report of a hack or exploit. The drop lines up with a market-wide liquidation wave that also hit Bitcoin, Ether and Dogecoin.

Why did DOT fall more than Bitcoin?

DOT has less trading volume than Bitcoin and had just rallied about 45% in September, so forced selling and profit-taking moved its price more.
