Chainlink Staking: How to Stake LINK, Rewards and Risks

In a nutshell: Chainlink staking means locking LINK on Ethereum through the official app at staking.chain.link so it backs oracle feed performance. Community stakers can put in 1–15,000 LINK when the pool has room; when we checked on October 13, 2026 the community pool was full at 40,875,000 LINK and showed a 4.32% variable reward rate. Unstaking takes a 28-day cooldown plus a 7-day claim window. Educational only; not financial advice.

Chainlink staking is how LINK holders help secure Chainlink oracle services and earn LINK rewards in return. You stake from a self-custodial Ethereum wallet on the official staking.chain.link app. The current program is Staking v0.2, which has been in General Access since December 2023.

Below: how Chainlink staking works, pool caps and who can join, the live reward rate, step-by-step staking, liquid options when the pool is full, risks, taxes and FAQ. New to the idea? Start with our explainer on what staking in crypto means.

What Is Chainlink Staking?

Chainlink is an oracle network: it brings real-world data (like ETH/USD prices) onchain for smart contracts. Chainlink’s staking page describes staking as a way for node operators and community members to back the performance of those oracle services with staked LINK and earn rewards for helping secure the network.

Staking v0.2 launched in late 2023 as a modular upgrade over v0.1. According to the v0.2 overview blog, it added unbonding, node-operator slashing, a variable reward rate and a larger pool. At launch it secured the ETH/USD Data Feed on Ethereum: community stakers can raise an alert if the feed has been down for more than three hours (node operators get a 20-minute priority window first).

Important differences from typical proof-of-stake chain staking (like Ethereum or Polygon):

  • You stake on Ethereum mainnet, not on a separate Chainlink chain.
  • Rewards come from a fixed emission bucket shared across the pool (plus planned future user fees), not from validating blocks on a L1.
  • Community stakers are not slashable in v0.2. Only Node Operator Stakers can lose stake if a valid alert is raised.

Community Pool vs Node Operator Pool

v0.2 has two allotments inside a total cap of 45,000,000 LINK, per the official parameter table:

Pool Allotment Min per address Max per address
Community Stakers 40,875,000 LINK 1 LINK 15,000 LINK
Node Operator Stakers 4,125,000 LINK 1,000 LINK 75,000 LINK

Most readers are Community Stakers: you lock LINK, it is automatically delegated toward node operators without giving them custody of your tokens, and 4% of community rewards go to node operators as a Delegation Reward. Node Operator Stakers serving in-scope feeds risk a 700 LINK slash each if a valid ETH/USD alert is raised; a successful alerter earns 7,000 LINK.

Who Can Stake and Is the Pool Full?

Anyone with LINK on Ethereum can try to stake in General Access, as long as the community protocol still has room. The FAQ is clear: when the community pool is filled, new stake can enter only after an existing staker finishes unstaking and frees space.

When we checked staking.chain.link on October 13, 2026, the community staking protocol showed:

  • 40,875,000 / 40,875,000 LINK — the pool was full
  • 4.32% current v0.2 variable reward rate
  • Status: v0.2 open for General Access

So you cannot add new community stake right now unless capacity opens. Options while you wait: watch the dashboard for free space, use a liquid staking queue (covered below), or hold LINK until the protocol expands. Chainlink has said the size cap is expected to increase over time as staking covers more services.

Chainlink Staking Rewards

v0.2 uses a variable reward rate. A fixed amount of LINK rewards is made available per unit of time; if the pool is less than full, the same rewards are split among fewer stakers and the effective rate rises. When the community pool is entirely filled, the launch design set a base floor of 4.5% a year before the 4% delegation cut, which equals an effective 4.32% for community stakers — matching the rate shown on the live app when we checked on October 13, 2026.

Rewards accrue as Attributed Rewards, split into:

  • Claimable Rewards — you can withdraw these anytime without resetting anything.
  • Locked Rewards — they unlock over a 90-day ramp-up that starts when you first stake (or resets if you unstake or add more stake on the same address).

At 50% through the ramp-up, half of your attributed rewards are claimable. After 90 days, new rewards arrive fully claimable. Adding more LINK on the same address resets the ramp-up (locked rewards are not forfeited). Unstaking early forfeits locked rewards to other community stakers. Check staking.chain.link/rewards for live figures — rates and fill change.

Unbonding, Cooldown and Claim Window

To exit, you initiate an unstake on the app. Per Chainlink’s FAQ and v0.2 blog:

  1. 28-day cooldown (unbonding period) begins.
  2. Then a 7-day claim window opens. You can withdraw all or part of your stake.
  3. If you do nothing during the claim window, your LINK automatically re-enters v0.2 and you keep your spot.

Staked LINK keeps accruing rewards through both the cooldown and the claim window until you actually unstake. That design keeps stake available for slashing security while giving you a way out. Plan on roughly five weeks from “Unbond” to funds in your wallet if you claim promptly after the cooldown.

How to Stake LINK on staking.chain.link

Only use the official URL: https://staking.chain.link. Bookmark it and re-check the address every time; phishing sites copy this page.

  1. Get LINK on Ethereum. Buy LINK on an exchange and withdraw it to your own crypto wallet on the Ethereum network (not another chain).
  2. Keep ETH for gas. Staking requires onchain transactions on Ethereum mainnet.
  3. Open the app. Go to staking.chain.link and connect MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet, WalletConnect or a supported smart-contract wallet. Hardware wallets can connect through MetaMask.
  4. Confirm capacity. If the community bar shows 40,875,000 / 40,875,000, you cannot stake until space frees up.
  5. Stake. Enter an amount between 1 and 15,000 LINK, approve the token spend, then confirm the stake transaction.
  6. Track rewards. Use staking.chain.link/rewards for your variable rate, claimable vs locked balances and ramp-up progress. Claim claimable rewards anytime.
  7. To exit. Click unbond, wait 28 days, then claim within 7 days — or let it restake automatically if you change your mind.

Liquid Staking and Exchanges

Exchanges. As of our October 13, 2026 check, Coinbase’s Chainlink staking page states that Chainlink staking is not supported on Coinbase (you can still trade LINK; some regions may see DeFi yield products that are not the same as native Chainlink staking). Do not assume your exchange offers native LINK staking — check the Earn or Staking tab for your country.

Liquid staking (stLINK). Third-party protocol stake.link lets you deposit LINK and receive stLINK, a rebasing liquid staking token. It stakes into Chainlink’s native pools when capacity allows, or queues you in a Priority Pool when the community pool is full. You can also buy stLINK on Curve at market price. This is not the official Chainlink app — you add stake.link contract and queue risk. See our liquid staking guide for how LSTs work.

Method Who holds your LINK Exit Main catch
Native (staking.chain.link) You (non-custodial contracts) 28-day cooldown + 7-day claim Pool often full; 90-day reward ramp-up
stLINK (stake.link) You hold stLINK; protocol stakes LINK Sell stLINK, or protocol withdraw Extra smart-contract / queue risk
Exchange Earn The exchange (if offered) Platform rules Often unavailable for LINK; custody risk

Risks of Chainlink Staking

  • Price risk. A ~4% LINK yield will not offset a large drop in LINK’s dollar price.
  • Capacity / timing risk. The pool is often full. You may wait a long time for a spot, and unbonding takes about a month.
  • Reward forfeiture. Unstaking before the 90-day ramp-up finishes forfeits locked rewards. Adding stake on the same address resets the ramp-up.
  • Smart contract risk. Contracts were audited (including a Code4rena contest), but bugs remain possible. The design is non-custodial: only your key can unstake.
  • Phishing. Fake staking sites are common. Type staking.chain.link yourself.
  • Node operator slashing (indirect). Community stake is not slashed in v0.2, but the security model depends on operators. Future versions could change conditions after a timelock.
  • Liquid staking extras. stLINK can trade below 1 LINK and adds another protocol’s risk.
  • Gas costs. Small stakes can lose a large share of rewards to Ethereum fees.

Taxes in the US and Canada

In the US, IRS Revenue Ruling 2023-14 says cash-method taxpayers include staking validation rewards in gross income when they gain dominion and control, at fair market value. Chainlink staking is an oracle-security program rather than classic L1 proof-of-stake, so ask a tax professional how the ruling applies to your rewards.

In Canada, the CRA’s staking guidance says exchange staking rewards are generally income when credited, and mining/staking business income must be reported. Our crypto staking taxes guide covers both countries in more detail.

This article is for education only and is not financial, investment or tax advice. Staking involves risk, including loss of value. Do your own research before staking.

FAQ

What is the minimum for Chainlink staking?

Community Stakers can stake as little as 1 LINK and up to 15,000 LINK per address, if the pool has room.

Is the Chainlink staking pool full?

It was full at 40,875,000 / 40,875,000 LINK when we checked staking.chain.link on October 13, 2026. Recheck the live dashboard; space opens when someone finishes unstaking.

Can community stakers be slashed?

No. In v0.2, only Node Operator Stakers serving in-scope feeds can be slashed (700 LINK each on a valid ETH/USD alert). Community stakers are not at risk of slashing in this version.

How long does it take to unstake LINK?

A 28-day cooldown, then a 7-day claim window. Miss the window and your stake re-enters the pool automatically.

How does Chainlink staking compare with Ethereum staking?

Ethereum staking helps secure the Ethereum blockchain; Chainlink staking backs oracle feed performance with LINK. Exits, rewards and slash rules differ. See our guide on how to stake Ethereum to compare.
